Belmont Mayor Julia Mates Announces November Candidacy
Belmont, CA – Today, Belmont Mayor Julia Mates announced her candidacy to serve as the City’s first directly elected Mayor. The November election will be the first in which the City will convert to district-based city council seats and a directly-elected citywide mayor.
In January of this year, Mates was selected by a unanimous vote of the City Council to serve as Mayor, the first Asian American woman to do so .
Said Mates, “I’ll continue to lead efforts to maintain Belmont’s amazing quality of life, and to engage residents from every neighborhood in continuing to build an inclusive and welcoming city. As a working Mom, I know how important it is that we deliver programs and services that support our kids, families, and seniors.”
Mates is endorsed by a broad coalition of County and local leaders who include Assemblymember Kevin Mullin; County Board of Supervisors President Don Horsley and Supervisors Carole Groom, Dave Pine, and Warren Slocum; Belmont Vice Mayor Tom McCune; Former Belmont City Treasurer John Violet; Belmont City Councilmembers Davina Hurt and Charles Stone; Belmont – Redwood Shores School District President Sam Leinbach, Vice President Jim Howard, and BRSSD Trustees Rahila Passi and Suvarna Bhopale, among many others.
